Vacancy for Senior Engineer

Background

The challenges facing the land drainage and flood management sector are now key items on the national agenda. The Black Sluice Internal Drainage Board is committed to recruiting a first class engineer to maintain its reputation for innovation and service excellence.

The successful candidate will be a key player within the management team. Reporting to the Chief Executive and the Board, the Senior Engineer leads a design team and manages the works depot (and depot Works Manager) located some 10 miles from Head Office.

Information concerning the history of the Board, its vision and objectives are explained in this website.

The Role

The Senior Engineer works with other top team managers and the Chief Executive to develop Board policies and strategies. The ability to visualise and plan ahead is paramount. It is the responsibility of the Senior Engineer to formulate achievable action plans.

Specifically, the Senior Engineer’s key objectives include:

The Person

In addition to being able to demonstrate the necessary engineering expertise, the Senior Engineer must be an excellent planner, manager, leader and communicator.

The Board’s team is small yet its remit is wide ranging. From formal presentations to on site meetings, the Senior Engineer will be the public face of the Board; expected to handle stakeholders politely and professionally.

Much of the success of the Board has been through a combination of sound planning and management. The majority of people who work for the Board are very experienced; it is the effective management and leadership of those people which enables the Board to achieve its objectives.

In addition to sound leadership there is the need to manage and monitor a range of administrative tasks. Here the Board is continuously improving methods of harvesting, managing and storing information. The Senior Engineer will take a lead in driving change and harnessing new technologies to ensure the Board stays at the forefront of development.

Hence the ability to plan is essential; equally vital is meticulous attention to detail.

As previously mentioned, the Board is a small team of highly experienced professionals. A successful Senior Engineer will be one who works well as part of that team. The ability to adapt to situations and people is critical. The job would not suit a person who enjoys sitting in an office emailing instructions to colleagues. To be a successful Senior Engineer requires a personal touch with excellent interpersonal skills.
